Humour Assignment

Humour Unit Final Assignment
Inquiry Question: What is funny?
Your task is to answer the above question by creating something funny and uploading it to your blog.
Step 1:  Produce/create something funny.
Step 2: Write a 1-2 page explanation of why your creation is funny.  Explain what type of comedy you have created and why it meets the criteria of that type of comedy.
Step 3:  Reflect.  In your explanation, include a 1-2 paragraph reflection on the experience of creating something humourous.  What was challenging/easy about the process?
Your creation can be a song, a video production, a short story, a script, a comic, a fake news story (either print or video), or anything else creative (see your teacher).
It must be satire, farce, comedy of ideas or comedy of manners.  The humour should be appropriate for the school environment.
You will complete this task alone or in pairs.

Second Satire Blog Post - Current Event Satire

Like Jonathon Swift, satirists like to highlight the absurdity of an issue by satirizing the issue of event.  Check out the News Brief: BP Ready To Resume Spilling Oil.

Now, find a short news item, link to it in your blog, and then write you own short satirical version of the story.

First Satire Blog Post

1.  Read the story from The Onion
and decide why it is satire. (consider the four techniques of satire.)
Now it's time to write your own.

2.  Consider an issue of interest to teens.  Now, take a satirical look at that issue and write your own brief article.  Check out mine:

Collingwood Student in Perfect Uniform, Shunned

A student who cannot be named in order to protect her identity, found herself shunned by her classmates when she arrived on time to her English 9 Pre AP class with her uniform in correct order.  Her cohort chuckled at her tucked in shirt and appropriate skirt length.  Her gray knee socks pulled up to her knees seem to be the final straw.

The snickering behind her back progress to all out hostility when she refused to wear her outdoor jacket in class.  The students decided to start a petition to ban such inappropriate correct use of the uniform as it made the rest of them look so bad.

And finally

3.  Visit your colleagues blogs, read their satirical stories and leave a comment with your perspective (agree or disagree, offer your own ideas or examples.)
